Without a doubt, Uwe Steinberg (who died in 1983 having just turned 40) belongs to the most important advocates of East German photography. He chose to portray Berlin's inhabitants in their true image, instead of the "official" image desired by the former East German authorities.


1942 Born in Wroclaw
1949 Attends school in Jesberg (Hessen)
1956 Moves to Düsseldorf, first photographic attempt with a "box"
1957 Family moves to Leipzig
1959 Moves to Dessau
1960/61 Joins "novum", a group specifying in photography
1961 Does A Levels/Higher Grade in Dessau, starts to work as an apprentice for press agency ADN-Zentralbild
1963 Works for ADN-Zentralbild under the guidance of his mentor, Horst Sturm
1966/69 Correspondence degree course at VDJ journalism technical college in Leipzig
1969 Founds and becomes a member of the group "Gruppe
  Jugendfoto Berlin"
1970 Photojournalist for NBI in Berlin
1972/74 Instructor for photography courses at VDJ
1974/78 Correspondence degree course in photography at University of Graphic Arts in Leipzig
1979 Member of VBK-DDR
1981 Travels to Cambodia and Vietnam
1983 Dies April 8th of his injuries in a traffic accident in Budapest
